Mayor Gregory Steps Off of Council
Don Gregory announced his retirement from the city council during our meeting on Friday, December 21. The mayor’s last day will be December 31. Don has been a member of the council for 24 years, and has been a valuable part of helping the city through a variety of challenges over the last three decades.
During the first meeting of January following an election, the council typically chooses a mayor and deputy mayor from among its members. With the mayor resigning, it’s obvious the mayor position will be held by a different council member. Mayor Gregory, in his interview with The Daily News, even went so far as to endorse one member for the position.
The mayor’s formal role is to chair the council meetings and acting as the ceremonial head of the city, and will often include representing the city to other organizations and its citizens. Regardless of who ends up in that position, filling Don’s shoes will be a tall order.
